I have seen this to quote Jacob.. " Carrerization of Purpose" really go bad for some women and men for that matter in the workplace. At my previous job, there were several women I knew very well who did well themselves and had husbands who also did well financially. I also heard a lot of personal drama between my coworkers and their spouses as well as heard stories about their children who clearly needed more attention and love from their parents. Yet again and again these women chose their jobs over their children's needs. They somehow felt they HAD to work, even though many were married to husbands making high six figures. They often felt torn about their kids needing them but also worrying " what people on LinkedIn would think" if they quit to stay home with kids. In a few instances some tween children of my colleagues were literally calling their mothers....screaming for love and attention and were pushed off on extracurricular activities, nannies, and plain ignored. This turned into behavior problems, compulsions, and depression. I am not a mother, but I cannot think of what is more important than meeting your child's needs. This lie is SO pervasive that many of these women literally prioritize a job they don't even like that much to impress their B-School friends on LinkedIn over their child. I am confident that they can live a full and happy life as a family making 700K instead of 900K.
