Voting Reminded Me Of My Mission
I’ve spent most of my life not really fitting in. Initially, in middle school and high school, it had a lot to do with the fact that I was raised on classical content. I read Shakespeare with my family rather than the newest YA novel; I watched old movies, not TV shows on the CW; I listened to opera and classical music, not rap or pop.
As you might imagine, that didn’t make me the most popular kid in class.
Then, when I went to college, I didn’t fit in for other reasons. I was the only religious Jew in my opera program (and, to be fair, one of the very few at the University of Southern California at all). I celebrated Jewish holidays, which meant I missed rehearsals and classes consistently. I dressed differently than my friends because I adhered to modesty rules. I kept kosher and ate differently than everyone else.
