Believing In God Gives You Worth...No Matter WHAT.
I recently posted a video on my channel entitled, “I'm Having A Baby. Should I Feel Guilty For WANTING To Stay Home?” In it, I talked about how women are so often told to find their worth outside of the home…and when they find they want to spend more time with their children and families, they feel guilty for giving up on their “dreams” and hard work.
But one thing I didn’t address in that video, something I’ve been ruminating on since I published it, is where our worth really comes from. Is it internal? Is it determined by what other people think?
Believing in God is the greatest blessing we could receive. Why? Once you believe in God, you recognize your true worth simply because you are a child of God. Is there anything more empowering than that? No matter what you do, you will always have a part of God inside of you. And that means that you have worth…no matter what.
As I’ve been exploring my Jewish faith, I’ve been relearning where my worth comes from. For those who don’t know, I grew up orthodox and then “left the derech,” which means “left the path” of righteousness. I stopped practicing the rituals and I often felt ashamed turning to God in times of need because I didn’t feel worthy of Him, knowing that I wasn’t practicing His commandments.
In the last few years, I have been coming back to my practice of Judaism and in doing so, I have recognized the truth - that even when I’m not practicing everything I should be, doing my best and leading with intention makes me worthy of God’s love.
Does this mean we can act horribly using the excuse of, “No matter what, I have worth in God’s eyes”? Of course not. What it means is that when we do something wrong, we can always come back from it. We can always repent. And we are never so far down the path of sin that we are no longer children of God.
I sometimes think of films that depict addiction when I consider the idea of worthiness. Often, people lose everything when they follow the path of their addiction with no regard for anything else. At the end of it all, when they’ve hit rock bottom, if people don’t believe in God, they don’t believe they can be redeemed. They don’t believe they can come back from all of their bad choices - and they don’t believe they are worthy enough to even try.
But when you believe in God, even when you are at your lowest point, you know that you are worthy simply because God created you. You know that your mistakes don’t make you worthless. And that is the most beautiful thing. So if you’re ever feeling low or doubting your worth, remember - you are worthy simply by virtue of being a child of God.
