5 Ways To Spend The Perfect Rainy Day!
Happy Tuesday, classic crew! Have you felt spring starting to bloom all around you? The weather in Virginia has been absolutely gorgeous the last few days, even reaching a high of 77 degrees…and yet it’s supposed to sleet the rest of the week. But if that’s not spring, I don’t know what is! Spring is a mixture of gorgeous, beautiful days filled with flowers and blue skies followed immediately by rainy days with a cold wind. You really can’t predict what each morning will bring.
With that in mind, I thought it would be perfectly appropriate to give you some suggestions for what to do on your next rainy weekend. Sometimes it can feel like we have run out of fun ideas and there’s nothing left to do. But there is something very cozy and special about a rainy day, so why not take advantage? I used to love rainy days in Los Angeles because they were so rare, and I’d always watch Die Hard with a cup of hot chocolate. (Does Die Hard not strike you as very classic? I can understand that…but it is one of my favorite movies.) Nowadays, I try to enjoy the weather by keeping cozy with my husband.
So without further ado, here are my top five ways to spend a rainy day:
Movie marathon. Yes, of course this is an obvious one. But I actually have a couple of unique spins on it, so hear me out!
Option #1: Most of the time, we scroll and scroll until we find a movie we can agree on and watch that for fun. But most of us have a few movies we’d love to show our spouses that they haven’t seen, and vice versa. So take a few moments to sit down by yourselves and each choose a movie that you’d each love to share with the other. Then watch both!
Option #2: Another great option on a rainy day is to actually do a movie marathon. Watch a series of films that you haven’t necessarily watched all in a row! Here are a few good recommendations: Lord of the Rings, Back to the Future, and The Dark Night Trilogy.
Bake something delicious. Baking on a rainy day is just the epitome of coziness. Pick out a new recipe or an old standby. Get your significant other involved! Set out the ingredients, put on your aprons, and get to work. Don’t forget to put on a great playlist to get you both in the mood to work in the kitchen. And don’t forget a cold glass of milk if you decide to make chocolate chip cookies! Once it’s in the oven, make sure to savor the delicious smell that pervades the house, then go to town and enjoy your creations.
Learn a new craft and hobby. I absolutely love this suggestion. How often do we really get an opportunity to learn something new? We so often take for granted that we are busy, but a rainy day is often a wonderful reminder to slow down and take things easy. With that in mind, pick out something you’ve always wanted to learn: an instrument you have at home but don’t often practice, a new craft like knitting or crocheting, or a creative endeavor like writing or painting. Watch a YouTube tutorial and then get started! The nice thing about this activity is that it can be done with someone else or alone. And sometimes it’s nice to enjoy your own time.
Play boardgames. As I’ve mentioned before, my husband is a boardgame aficionado. He collects them, and absolutely loves playing them and teaching me the rules. Now, there are a few games that I’ve come to really enjoy, and playing a boardgame with your spouse is a really fun way to spend an afternoon. Make sure to set up the ambience: get a fire going in your fireplace or put on a YouTube video of a fireplace, find a playlist that fits the theme of the game you’re playing, and put out some snacks and beverages. Make the boardgame itself an event! And choose something you’ll both enjoy. Here are just a few recommendations (Jacob and I will be doing a video or podcast at some point with our top ten game recommendations, so I’ll leave that list for a later date):
Snuggle in and read a great book. Nothing is cozier than reading a great book on a rainy day. Find your softest blanket, make your favorite hot beverage (whether that be coffee, tea, or hot chocolate), pick out a book you enjoy reading, and snuggle in! I emphasize a book that you enjoy, because I have a ton of books on my radar right now that I feel it’s important to read but I wouldn’t read for fun. Instead, to make your day feel really nice and relaxing, choose something you actually just want to read. Additionally, there’s something really nice about reading in the same room as someone else, so get your spouse in on the fun, too.
Making this list just made me excited for our next rainy day, and I hope it gave you some inspiration as well! What are some of your favorite rainy day activities? Let me know in the comments!

I spent the last rainy day here listening to some of the book club book and working on a jigsaw puzzle. On snowy cold days, we'll have a fire in the fireplace and just enjoy watching it or cooking snacks over the fire. (Or working on a jigsaw puzzle, which is on the table next to the fireplace!) I got into puzzles during the covid lockdowns. :)
Rainy days are the best!! Lovely suggestions, Abby!
