The TRUTH About Beauty Standards - I'm TIRED Of Hearing How BAD They ALL ARE
5 Things An Elegant Woman Should NEVER Wear!
Dressing elegantly in 2021 is a STRUGGLE. Whenever you wear anything remotely modest, people think you look like an old woman. Whenever you wear something put together, people ask if you’re going somewhere fancy. I get both of these reactions on a somewhat regular basis! I wear a nice dress with pearls – “You look matronly.” I wear a pretty skirt and top – “Oh, where are you off to?”
If you’re frustrated, trust me - you’re not alone.
The fact of the matter is, fashion trends have both been skewing younger and more immodest in the last year. Right now, the trends tell us to dress like we’re in the 90s (with butterfly clips and lettuce hems) which truly make us look like children, and additionally, we’re to wear bras as tops and shorts that barely cover our bottoms. And let’s not even get into the conflation of sexuality and youth – that’s a problem in and of itself.
But today I want to share 5 things an elegant woman should NEVER wear. And let’s be honest – this is barely the tip of the iceberg!
Biker shorts and long tops. Have you ever passed a woman on the street and thought to yourself – did she forget her pants? That drives me crazy! Now, I’m not a fan of biker shorts or leggings on their own because they are A) too revealing and B) not stylish. But there’s a trend of wearing a shirt longer than your shorts so that it looks like you aren’t wearing anything at all on your lower half – and it’s probably one of the least elegant things I can imagine. Do you want people to think you left the house without half of your outfit? Wasn’t that a nightmare we used to have as children? Don’t give into the trend, my friends. It’s not worth it – and you’ll look back at your old photos and wonder if you actually were wearing anything underneath your shirt twenty years ago.
Short shorts. You know the ones I’m talking about. The ones that show the bottom half of your butt cheek. DON’T. DO. IT. First of all, your skin is going to touch every single thing that you sit on that day. Doesn’t that seem kind of disgusting? Second, it’s not classic to show everyone every bit of you. What’s classic is to have some mystery; strategically show certain parts of your body; and wear clothing that accentuates your figure rather than reveals everything all at once. And for those who say they’re wearing short shorts because it’s simply too hot, all I have to say is – three inches of fabric to cover your bottom won’t make a difference.
Bucket hats. Who thought bucket hats were a trend that needed to be revived? I think of bucket hats and I think of children. No, scratch that. I think of babies. Little babies sitting at the beach, slathered in sunscreen as their parents try to protect them from sunburns. Is that what we want to look like? Is that what elegant women try to emulate? Nope, nope, and more nope. You know what truly is classic? A beautiful straw sunhat. Throw on a sunhat and you will look classic and beautiful and not like a woman in her twenties trying to look like an infant.
Giant Hoop Earrings. I personally love a good hoop earring, but there’s one type that always gives me pause – the hoop earrings that are so large they could literally be bracelets. These kind of giant hoop earrings terrify me. It is already risky to wear some hoops because they get caught on things – but when the earring is so large pretty much anything could catch on it, you’re playing with fire. And they certainly aren’t elegant. My recommendation? Find a small hoop earring to wear and turn your giant hoop earrings into bangles.
Tube tops. Tube tops are all kinds of wrong. If your shirt is so small that your bra barely fits underneath it, if your shirt has no straps so you’re constantly fidgeting with it to make sure it sits in place – it’s not the shirt for you. Nowadays, women are wearing tube tops with tiny miniskirts, and the whole outfit is an opportunity to flash someone. That’s not classic. Wear a top that fits. Wear a top that covers more rather than less. And you’ll find that you will end up standing out rather than fitting in.
What other fashion trends do you think are NOT classic or elegant? I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments below. And let me know if you’d like me to do a part two!
