5 Classic Ways To Decorate Your Home!
Hello classic crew and happy Thursday! How are you doing? I loved hearing all of your responses in our discussion thread about Halloween. As the holiday gets closer, it’s interesting to hear what you all think! For me, I am breathing a sigh of relief for a few reasons. One, we just finished the Jewish holidays and even though they were fantastic, it’s also nice to have a break! You know how preparing for Thanksgiving can feel overwhelming? Now imagine doing that for a month straight. 😳 Crazy, right?? Second, my family is finally home from Israel so Jacob and I have a little more support than we had! I am actually writing this while getting my hair done, and I can only do that because my mother is watching the baby, so hooray for that!
But today, I wanted to talk about decorating your home in a classic way. As you all know, my husband and I recently bought a house, so interior decorating has been at the forefront of my mind lately. Making our home feel warm, cozy, and uniquely ours has been my favorite project. It is so much fun to develop our interior decorating style together and make big decisions on pieces we hope to have for many years to come. But even if you aren’t starting from scratch on a whole new home, refreshing your space with new décor ideas can make your house feel brand new! So with that in mind, I want to share 5 classic ways to decorate your home and truly embrace “homemaking,” as in, making your house into a home. Let’s get into it!
Find your style and embrace it. Did you know there are a ton of different interior décor styles? There’s farmhouse, country coastal, mid-century modern, traditional, and that’s just naming a few. Figuring out what style you love - and it may be more than one! - will give you direction when you’re buying and thrifting things for your home. Instead of owning a hodgepodge of pieces that weren’t intentionally chosen to make your home feel cohesive, you will add new things with an eye for making your space look all of a piece. Before I learned about the importance of intentionality, I use to simply buy the cheapest thing and not even think about how it fit with what I already owned. Now, when I look at new pieces to add to our house, I keep in mind the style I want to emulate throughout our space. And it makes our whole house feel so much more beautiful.
Mix thrifted pieces with new pieces. One of the ways to make a home feel fresh and modern is to have an eclectic mix of pieces. Not everything needs to be totally new, and in fact, sometimes it’s better when they’re not! Having those pieces with history mixed in with newer pieces gives your home some interest and dimension. For example, in my son’s nursery we have a lot of newer furniture but my side table, which is my favorite piece in the room, is thrifted. It adds something special to the space that his nursery wouldn’t have if we had simply purchased entirely new pieces. As well, treating thrifting like a treasure hunt is super fun!
Revivify old furniture you already have. Remember how I mentioned I used to buy whatever furniture was the cheapest available? Well, not all of it has to be thrown in the trash! Finding new ways to make it fit your aesthetic is a wonderful way to express your creativity and save some money. We have some pieces I plan on painting and changing the hardware for so that it fits our home and still serves a purpose. Another option is simply using your furniture in a new way. A storage chest could become a side table or coffee table, for example. The possibilities are endless!
Hang things on your walls. Nothing makes a house feel like a home faster than hanging things on your walls. A sign of impermanence is not taking the time to put up art or photos because you know you’ll be moving again. That’s why in most of the places we have lived, I have made a point of putting things up on the walls. And the few places I haven't, its because we lived there shorter than six months! So find art that speaks to you; print out photos and frame them; make a gallery wall; make your walls as much a part of your décor as your furniture. And don’t forget about mirrors! Mirrors make every space feel bigger and can really show off your style and taste.
Make your home welcoming. The most classic way to decorate your home is to do so in a way that is inviting and welcoming. Your home should be a place people feel comfortable and excited to spend time. Décor should never get in the way of enjoying a space - it should enhance the homey experience. So add blankets, add candles, add rugs, add coasters, make your space livable as well as beautiful and you will love coming home every day.

Today’s newsletter is very inspired by our movie for A.V. Club tonight! I mean, how beautiful were the clothes in Mona Lisa Smile? 50's fashion is so pretty, so feminine, and accentuates the female figure so much more than anything we wear today. There’s a reason people enjoy watching period films - the clothing and fashion is beautiful to look at!

I loved these tips! One tip I have use is to make at a space in a home personalized. Instead of putting up random art or scenic photos, I prefer putting up my own artwork, family photos, paintings with meaning and history behind them, and quotes that resonate with me. Not only do I enjoy the space more, but it is uniquely mine, even if not one cohesive style.
I love creating a cozy ambiance in my home. It’s tough with littles running around, but I try to get fresh flowers, light candles, play music, etc. In decorating, I’ve found it’s easiest for me to generally neutral colored rooms that I can change up with pops of accent colors in my decorating.
